If Madrid takes a harder line, you want someone who already knows every clause of the treaty talks inside out. Continuity matters more than ever in that scenario.

@Carlos Pitaluga continuity is one argument, but a new government in Madrid might respond better to a fresh face across the table.

@Hannah Levy maybe, but nobody gets a honeymoon from Vox. Experience is what counts when the frontier is at stake.

Keith Azopardi has been making the case for a different approach for a long time. A change in Madrid could be the moment for a change here too.

A new Spanish government and a new Chief Minister at the same time would mean a lot of uncertainty at once.

@Paul Gonzalez or a clean start on both sides. It depends how you look at it.

Nice to see Gemma Arias-Vasquez and Damian Bossino on the list. Whoever leads next will need a new generation behind them, whichever party they come from.

Yes, more young voices in this conversation please. Most of us under 35 have only known the open frontier.

George Mifsud

@Zara Khubchandani and the four-freedoms generation will be the ones living with whatever gets agreed.

Honestly the most important thing is that whoever it is keeps the frontier flowing for the thousands who cross it every day. Party colours matter less than that.

@Sophie Hernandez well said. Thanks everyone for keeping this one civil, it is a big question.

Damian Bossino comes across well when he talks about the economy. If things get difficult at the border, business confidence will be the first thing to go.

Sir Peter Caruana dealt with Madrid through some very difficult years. If things turn frosty, an experienced hand who has seen it before is worth a lot.

@James Sacarello it is a hypothetical poll, but I would be surprised if he wanted to come back to front-line politics.

James Sacarello

@Ryan Olivero true, but the question is who would be best, not who is likely. On that measure he deserves to be on the list.

Dr Garcia has spent years on the European side of all this. In a tough negotiation, a calm and detail-focused approach could be exactly what is needed.

Agree. A lot of this will be fought in Brussels as much as in Madrid.

Sir Joe Bossano has been through every chapter of Gibraltar’s relationship with Spain. Nobody would out-stubborn him at a negotiating table 😄

Luke Ellul

Stubborn might be exactly the job description if Vox ends up in government.
